A “natural beauty” and a “stunning location” are only some of the descriptions Isabella Czartoryska used to identify the area around Staniszow. It is no wonder that in such circumstances, the palace that was built here had nothing in common with former castles that had defensive functions. However, the imagination of Count von Reuss knew no bounds. Built in the late eighteenth century, he ordered that the palace should be surrounded by a nearly twohundred hectare park and insisted that the brilliant architect should accomplish what nature or history could not do. Thus, artificial ruins of a medieval fortress, an artificial cave, a hermitage and hanging cliffs were created on his estate. They reportedly gave the property a very natural feeling and achieved general approval. Today, even these forgeries are considered historic monuments. The importance of Staniszow Palace can be evidenced by the fact that it was awarded the prestigious title of a Monument of History.
