The Princely Tower in Siedlęcin

The Princely Tower in Siedlęcin is one of the most preserved towers of this type in Europe. It is located almost 6 km far from the centre of Jelenia Góra in the picturesque surroundings of the Bóbr valley. Its clearly Gothic features from the times of its construction in the 14th century have not been lost during numerous renovations and reconstructions.

The tower is of rectangular shape with the dimensions of 20×14,5 m. Initially, it possessed three storeys and a basement but after the fire in the 16th century it was increased by one storey and covered with a four-pitched roof. The residential building is adjacent to the tower. It contained kitchen as well.

The building was erected in vicinity of the Bóbr river crossing at the order of the Jawor prince Henry I. From the 18th century until 1945 it remained in the hands of the Schaffgotsch family. Since 2010 it has been promoted by the association “Wieża Książęca” in Siedlęcin. It is a true architectural pearl. While sightseeing its raw interior one must pay attention to the technical solutions from 700 years ago. The walls of Great Room are decorated by paintings presenting the legend of Lancelot from the Lake, one of the knights of the Round Table. This one and only world Medieval painting presents the legend about this character.
