Sobieszów Palace
Sobieszów Palace
Until the fire of 1675, the Chojnik castle performed the main function of the seat of the Schaffgotsch family. When fire destroyed the castle located high up the hill, the family of these Silesian aristocrats, following the fashion of that time, decided to build a new residence. The works commenced in 1705. Until the residence in Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój was build it was the headquarters of the Schaffgotsch family and subsequently, it performed the function of their summer residence. They built it here so they could look at the castle ruins from the castle windows.
The palace stands at the top of the slope. It is in the shape of a rectangle and it has three storeys. A manor surrounded by a vast courtyard was built in the lower part of the terrain at the foot of the slope. After World War II the castle served as a school. After a comprehensive renovation in 2023 it became the seat of the management of the Karkonoski National Park. In the lower part there is a museum exhibition devoted to the history of both the palace itself and the family of Schaffgotsch. Right next to it, in the building of Great Stable, there is an interactive exhibition “Climatic Karkonosze Mountains” which presents in a rather unique and engaging manner natural issues of this corner of the Sudety Mountains.
